Vatican’s Marian Title Retreat: A Betrayal of Catholic Tradition
Catholic News Agency reports that some Protestant scholars welcomed a recent Vatican document discouraging traditional Marian titles like “Co-Redemptrix” and limiting “Mediatrix” usage. The doctrinal note *Mater Populi Fidelis*, approved by antipope Leo XIV and signed by “Cardinal” Víctor Manuel Fernández, claims these titles “could obscure” Christ’s sole mediation. Protestant theologians praised the document for aligning with their rejection of Catholic Mariology, with Lutheran professor David Luy affirming it addresses “central Protestant concerns” about Christ’s unique mediatorship.
