Subordination of Ecclesial Authority to Secular Powers
The article uncritically celebrates how officers “ensure the safety of the ‘pope’ and his collaborators” and manage crowds for “pastoral visits throughout Italy.” Pius IX’s Syllabus of Errors explicitly condemns such subservience in Proposition 20: “The ecclesiastical power ought not to exercise its authority without the permission and assent of the civil government” (Syllabus, Error 20).
