Cuban Bishops’ Modernist Capitulation to Revolutionary Chaos
EWTN News reports on a January 31, 2026, statement from the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba (COCC), warning of potential “social chaos and violence” amid catastrophic fuel shortages and economic collapse. The bishops attribute the crisis to U.S. sanctions under President Donald Trump, which have severed Cuba’s oil imports from Venezuela, Russia, Algeria, and Mexico. They plead for “structural, social, economic, and political changes” while thanking the U.S. for hurricane aid distributed through their structures. The bishops invoke antipope Leo XIV’s call for “dialogue” to avoid violence, echoing their own appeal for “de-escalation” and “fruitful collaboration.” Cuban analyst Osvaldo Gallardo condemns the communist regime’s refusal to reform but stops short of demanding its overthrow, framing justice as “true peace.”
Naturalism Replaces Supernatural Faith in Pastoral Response
The COCC’s message reduces the Church’s mission to a humanitarian NGO, fixated on temporal crises while ignoring Cuba’s spiritual desolation. Nowhere do the bishops call for repentance, restoration of the Social Reign of Christ the King, or public consecration of Cuba to the Sacred Heart. Their sole reference to faith is a vague invocation of “accompanying the most vulnerable” — a modernist distortion of charity stripped of its redemptive purpose. Pius XI’s Quas Primas (1925) unequivocally teaches that nations rejecting Christ’s authority invite divine chastisement:
“When men recognize, both in private and in public life, that Christ is King, society will at last receive the great blessings of real liberty, well-ordered discipline, peace and harmony” (Quas Primas, §19).
By contrast, the COCC reduces “the good of Cuba” to material stability, omitting any demand for Cuba’s submission to the One True Faith.
False Equivalence Between Communist Tyranny and Legitimate Authority
The bishops’ plea to place “the good of Cuba above partisan interests” implicitly legitimizes the communist regime as a valid governing power. This contradicts the Syllabus of Errors (1864), which condemns the belief that “the Church ought to be separated from the State, and the State from the Church” (Error 55). The Castro regime has systematically violated God’s law through atheistic indoctrination, persecution of Catholics, and suppression of the true Mass. Yet the COCC dares not name this tyranny, instead echoing antipope Leo XIV’s call for “dialogue” with criminals. St. Pius X’s Lamentabili Sane (1907) condemns such moral relativism:
“[Modernists] adulterate the concept of divine revelation by making it the product of man’s consciousness” (§22).
Collusion with Anti-Catholic Powers
The bishops’ gratitude toward the U.S. for aid distributed through Church channels exposes their alignment with geopolitical manipulators. Trump’s sanctions — while politically motivated — pale beside the COCC’s silence on six decades of communist persecution. Worse, they welcome collaboration with U.S. Ambassador Mike Hammer, whose government promotes abortion and gender ideology globally. This betrayal mirrors the conciliar sect’s addiction to “dialogue” with the enemies of Christ, condemned by Pius IX:
“It is false that the liberty of perdition… is conducive to corrupt morals and minds” (Syllabus, Error 79).
Omission of Cuba’s True Solution: Christ the King
Gallardo’s secular analysis — “the dictatorship has to go” — ignores the only remedy for Cuba: public submission to the Catholic Faith. The bishops’ modernist vocabulary (“social chaos,” “dialogue,” “common good”) avoids the uncompromising language of Trent and Vatican I. Cuba’s suffering stems not from oil shortages but from its rejection of the One True Church. As Pius XI warned:
“Nations will be in turmoil… until all men and nations recognize and reverence the Empire of our Redeemer” (Quas Primas, §31).
Until Cuba’s bishops demand the abolition of communism and the establishment of Christ’s Reign, their warnings are empty posturing.
