The congregation has already paid out over $480 million in the past 45 years, but an accelerating number of claims in the last decade has forced them to propose an “orderly distribution” of their remaining assets, including approximately 36 properties worth $216 million, or face liquidation. The organization stated that its history of abuse is “shameful and painful,” and that the interests of victims “remain our highest priority.” The province is “financially and canonically distinct” from the “broader Catholic Church,” meaning it cannot compel other Catholic institutions to help with the payout. The remaining 176 brothers in the province have an average age of 80.
