Naturalistic ‘Catholic’ Activism in Maine: The Conciliar Laity’s Surrender to Secular Power

The National Catholic Register portal (July 30, 2026) reports on the failed ballot initiative of Leyland Streiff, a layman presented as a “Catholic father,” to restrict girls’ sports to biological females in Maine. The article exposes the complete reduction of post-conciliar “Catholic” action to secular political lobbying, devoid of any supernatural density or recognition of Christ’s Social Kingship.

The Illusion of Catholic Action in a Masonic Framework

The cited article relates the efforts of Leyland Streiff, a marketing executive retired at 43, who heads “Maine Girl Dads” and “Protect Girls Sports in Maine.” Having resided in the state for a mere two and a half years, Streiff spearheaded a citizen-initiated referendum requiring 67,682 signatures. Though 82,000 were collected, the Secretary of State invalidated 1,500 signatures gathered by out-of-state petitioners due to a clerical error, a ruling upheld by the Maine Superior Court and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Streiff now appeals to federal court.

This entire spectacle unfolds within the novus ordo of the conciliar sect. The “Diocese of Portland” — a structure occupying the See of Portland — offered only tepid, bureaucratic support: a representative testified for legislation (which the Democratic legislature rejected) but the institution refused direct engagement with the referendum. Streiff laments this, contrasting it with the “bishops” of Colorado who “hosted weekend signature-gathering events at the state’s parishes.” This juxtaposition reveals the total subordination of the conciliar hierarchy to the secular state. They function as mere NGOs navigating the saeculum, petitioning Caesar for crumbs of natural law while ignoring the rex regum.

The article notes the initiative’s top donor: Illinois billionaire Richard Uihlein, contributor of $800,000. Uihlein, previously exposed by ProPublica for funding fake “Catholic” newspapers to attack Democrats, epitomizes the plutocratic manipulation of the “culture war.” The opposition — EqualityMaine, the Maine Women’s Lobby, GLBTQ Legal Advocates — retains the Elias Law Firm, famed for defeating Trump’s 2020 election suits. The battle is purely forensic, a contest of votes and dollars, signatures and forms. Nowhere does the supernatural order intrude.

Secular Vocabulary as Evidence of Theological Apostasy

The linguistic register of the article and its subjects is a confession of apostasy. Streiff speaks of being “called by God” — a subjective, Protestantized “vocation” untethered from the objective mission of the Church. He describes his conversion moment: scales falling from his eyes when his daughter’s teacher read a book on “polyamorous families” and “throuples.” This is the sensus fidelium reduced to parental outrage.

The female athletes testify using the lexicon of the enemy: “fairness,” “equal opportunity,” “integrity of competition,” “bodily autonomy,” “right to express their gender.” Destie Hohman Sprague of the Maine Women’s Lobby declares: “Attacking gender identity is an attack on all women and girls — from their bodily autonomy, to their right to express their gender however they see fit.” Streiff adopts this framework, speaking of “privacy concerns,” “voyeurism,” “violence,” “mental trauma.” He argues: “We raise our kids, telling them to trust their conscience… Now if you feel uncomfortable, something might be wrong with you.”

This is not Catholic argumentation; it is liberal humanism. The Syllabus of Errors (Pius IX, 1864) condemns precisely this: “Human reason, without any reference whatsoever to God, is the sole arbiter of truth and falsehood, and of good and evil” (Error 3); “The Church ought to be separated from the State, and the State from the Church” (Error 55); “The civil government… has a right to an indirect negative power over religious affairs” (Error 41). Streiff and his “Girl Dads” — Republicans and Democrats united — operate entirely within the ordo naturalis, appealing to the lex humana against the lex iniusta of gender ideology, while ignoring the lex divina and the lex ecclesiastica that alone give binding force to natural law.

Violation of Christ’s Kingship and the Church’s True Mission

Pius XI, in Quas Primas (1925), teaches that “the hope of lasting peace will not yet shine upon nations as long as individuals and states renounce and do not wish to recognize the reign of our Savior.” He institutes the Feast of Christ the King precisely “to address the needs of the present times and provide a special remedy against the plague that poisons human society. And this plague is the secularism of our times, so-called laicism.” The encyclical declares: “His reign encompasses also all non-Christians, so that most truly the entire human race is subject to the authority of Jesus Christ.” Rulers “have the duty to publicly honor Christ and obey Him… for it will remind them of the final judgment, in which Christ… will very severely avenge these insults.”

The Maine referendum initiative is the antithesis of this doctrine. It seeks not the social reign of Christ the King but a secular carve-out for “biological females” within a system that has already dethroned God. The Maine Human Rights Act (2014, 2021), the Title IX lawsuits, the executive orders of Trump and Biden — these are the leges humanae of a Masonic order. By engaging on this terrain, Streiff and the conciliar “diocese” legitimize the principium that the State is the source of rights (Syllabus, Error 39: “The State, as being the origin and source of all rights, is endowed with a certain right not circumscribed by any limits”).

The article reveals the total silence on the supernatural end of man. No mention of sin, grace, baptism, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the Final Judgment, Heaven or Hell. The “Catholic” motivation is reduced to protecting “medals and trophies” and “private spaces.” Streiff’s epiphany came not from the Summa Theologiae or the Catechism of Trent, but from the “murder of Charlie Kirk” — a Protestant political operative — which made him “look at my own life… reconcile that with my faith.” This is Modernism condemned in Lamentabili sane exitu (1907): “Faith, as assent of the mind, is ultimately based on a sum of probabilities” (Error 25); “Christ did not proclaim any specific, all-encompassing doctrine suitable for all times and peoples, but rather initiated a certain religious movement” (Error 59).

The Conciliar Laity as Agents of Naturalism

The symptomatic level exposes the deepest rot. The “National Catholic Register” — an organ of the neo-church (EWTN) — presents this political activism as heroic Catholic witness. Streiff is a graduate of the “University of Dallas” (a conciliar liberal arts college) and his wife of “Franciscan University of Steubenville” (a hotbed of charismatic emotionalism). Their formation is entirely post-conciliar: Gaudium et spes anthropology, Dignitatis humanae religious liberty, Nostra aetate indifferentism.

The “Diocese of Portland” — led by a “bishop” in the line of the usurpers from John XXIII onward — cannot even muster the courage to command the faithful to sign a petition defending the lex naturalis, fearing the loss of tax-exempt status or media opprobrium. Colorado’s “bishops” do so, but only as a political calculation. This is the “democratization of the Church” condemned by St. Pius X: the laity usurping the teaching office, acting independently of the hierarchy, and the hierarchy abdicating its duty to teach and govern in nomine Christi.

Streiff’s concluding boast — “Anybody can make a change… All it takes is standing up and doing something” — is the Pelagian heresy of activist laicism. It echoes the Syllabus Error 79: “It is false that the civil liberty of every form of worship… conduce more easily to corrupt the morals and minds of the people.” The “change” sought is not the instaurare omnia in Christo but a status quo ante of 1950s American civil religion.

The true Catholic response to gender ideology is not a referendum but the public profession of the Kingship of Christ and the condemnation of the Masonic state as intrinsically disordered. As Pius XI teaches: “When God and Jesus Christ… were removed from laws and states and when authority was derived not from God but from men, the foundations of that authority were destroyed.” Maine’s “Girl Dads” fight to preserve the ruins of a foundation already destroyed. They are useful idiots of the Antichurch, draining Catholic energy into the bottomless pit of secular politics while the conciliar sect occupies the Vatican and the true Mass is suppressed.

Non praevalebunt. The gates of Hell shall not prevail against the Church — but they have prevailed against the “National Catholic Register” and its “Girl Dads.”
