Vatican News Celebrates Centenary of False Church in Arctic: Ecumenical Indifferentism Replaces Christ the King

The Vatican News portal — the official propaganda organ of the conciliar sect occupying the Vatican — reports that the “Bishop” Erik Varden of Trondheim, Apostolic Administrator of Tromsø, presided over a Novus Ordo service in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, on 30 August 2026, to mark one hundred years since the first Catholic Mass was celebrated on the archipelago. The celebration was explicitly ecumenical, with representatives of the Lutheran Church of Norway participating, and the homily delivered by Varden reduced the Christian mission to a naturalistic therapy for “vulnerability” and “loneliness,” entirely devoid of the supernatural realities of sin, grace, the necessity of the Church for salvation, and the Social Kingship of Christ the King. This event is not a commemoration of the Faith but a public manifestation of the abomination of desolation standing where the Holy Place ought to be.

The Illegitimacy of the Celebrant and the Simulated Sacrifice

The article identifies the celebrant as “Bishop Erik Varden of Trondheim and Apostolic Administrator of Tromsø.” From the perspective of integral Catholic theology, this title is a usurpation. Varden, ordained a priest in 1999 and consecrated “bishop” in 2020 by the post-conciliar hierarchy, possesses no valid jurisdiction and no valid orders. The Defense of Sedevacantism demonstrates conclusively that the line of legitimate popes ended with Pius XII (1958). John XXIII and all subsequent claimants — including the current usurper antipope Leo XIV (Robert Prevost) — are manifest heretics who, by the very fact of their public adhesion to the conciliar errors (religious liberty, ecumenism, collegiality, new mass), have ipso facto lost all office in the Church (Canon 188.4; Bellarmine, De Romano Pontifice; Pope Paul IV, Cum ex Apostolatus Officio).

As St. Robert Bellarmine teaches: “A manifest heretic cannot be Pope… he cannot be the head of something of which he is not a member; now, he who is not a Christian is not a member of the Church, and a manifest heretic is not a Christian.” Consequently, the “bishops” appointed by these antipopes receive no jurisdiction from Christ. Their consecrations, performed within the new rite of 1968 (itself invalid in form and intention), are at best doubtful, at worst null. The “Mass” celebrated by Varden in Svalbard was not the Unbloody Sacrifice of Calvary offered by a valid priest, but a simulated liturgy — a Protestantized “table of assembly” that denies the propitiatory nature of the Sacrifice and the Real Presence as defined by the Council of Trent. The article’s phrase “centenary Eucharist” is a blasphemous misnomer; there is no Eucharist where there is no valid priesthood.

Ecumenical Indifferentism: The Rejection of Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus

The report states with evident pride: “Representatives of the Lutheran Church of Norway also participated, giving the celebration a strongly ecumenical character.” It further notes that “Catholic worship has therefore been made possible through the hospitality of the Church of Norway and local authorities… The centenary Eucharist was consequently also an act of thanksgiving for an ecumenical friendship with deep roots.”

This is the heresy of indifferentism condemned with anathema by Pope Pius IX in the Syllabus of Errors (Propositions 16, 17, 18) and by Pope Pius XI in Mortalium Animos (1928). The Syllabus condemns the proposition: “Man may, in the observance of any religion whatever, find the way of eternal salvation, and arrive at eternal salvation” (Prop. 16) and “Protestantism is nothing more than another form of the same true Christian religion, in which form it is given to please God equally as in the Catholic Church” (Prop. 18).

The “Church of Norway” is a Lutheran sect, formally heretical and schismatic since the 16th century. It denies the Sacrifice of the Mass, the priesthood, the papacy, the veneration of the Blessed Virgin and the Saints, and justification by faith alone. To participate in prayer with its ministers, to accept its “hospitality” for Catholic worship, and to call this “ecumenical friendship” is to deny the Divine Constitution of the Church. It teaches the faithful that heresy is a legitimate path to God. As Pius XI taught in Quas Primas: “There is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The “ecumenical friendship” celebrated in Svalbard is a covenant with death (Isaiah 28:15), a public betrayal of the souls in the Arctic who need not “friendship” but conversion to the one true Church.

A Naturalistic Anthropology Masquerading as Theology

Varden’s homily, as reported, is a masterpiece of modernist immanentism. He speaks of “vulnerability,” “loneliness,” “a sound sense of reality,” and the need to “knock on the door of every frozen hut.” He cites the Arctic hunter’s “troubled joy” at human contact as an image of the human condition. Nowhere does he mention sin, the Fall, the wrath of God, the necessity of Baptism, the state of grace, the Four Last Things, or the Cross of Christ as the sole remedy for the human condition.

This is the hermeneutics of continuity with the world, not with Tradition. It is the cult of man condemned by St. Pius X in Pascendi Dominici Gregis and Lamentabili Sane Exitu. Proposition 59 of Lamentabili condemns the error: “Christ did not proclaim any specific, all-encompassing doctrine suitable for all times and peoples, but rather initiated a certain religious movement, applied or applicable to different times and places.” Varden’s “message of reconciliation, healing and possible friendship” is precisely this: a vague, adaptable humanitarianism that replaces the depositum fidei with psychological accompaniment.

The article quotes Varden: “What we need is not more virtual fantasy; what we need is a sound sense of reality.” But the only sound sense of reality is the theological reality: “God is a just judge, strong and patient: and he is angry with the wicked every day” (Psalm 7:12). The “reality” of Svalbard — melting ice, 5G networks, isolated hunters — is a distraction from the ultimate reality: the immortal soul standing before the Judgment Seat of Christ. By silencing this, Varden commits spiritual homicide.

The Silence on the Social Kingship of Christ and the Rights of God

The centenary commemorates the first Mass celebrated by Bishop Johannes Olav Smit in 1926, encouraged by Cardinal Willem van Rossum. The article notes that in 1913, “Pope St. Pius X decided that the archipelago should belong ecclesiastically to the territory of the Catholic Church in Norway.” This reference to St. Pius X — the hammer of Modernism — is a cruel irony. The same Pius X who condemned the “synthesis of all heresies” (Modernism) in Pascendi would have anathematized the very concept of an “ecumenical celebration” in a Lutheran building presided over by a pseudo-bishop of the neo-church.

Pius XI, in Quas Primas (1925) — instituted precisely to combat the “plague… of secularism, so-called laicism” — declared: “If rulers of states therefore not refuse public veneration and obedience to the reigning Christ… let them fulfill this duty themselves and with their people, if they wish to maintain their authority inviolate and contribute to the increase of their homeland’s happiness.” The Syllabus of Errors condemns the proposition: “The Church ought to be separated from the State, and the State from the Church” (Prop. 55) and “In the present day it is no longer expedient that the Catholic religion should be held as the only religion of the State, to the exclusion of all other forms of worship” (Prop. 77).

The Svalbard celebration is the antithesis of Quas Primas. It acknowledges the secular sovereignty of Norway (the Svalbard Treaty of 1920) and the religious dominance of the Lutheran state church, while the “Catholic” presence begs for “hospitality.” There is no proclamation of Christ’s Kingship over the Arctic, no call for the conversion of the Norwegian state, no assertion of the Church’s innate and legitimate right (Syllabus, Prop. 26) to public worship and governance. The “mission” described is reduced to “pouring out our lives… bringing the message of reconciliation, healing and possible friendship.” This is NGO humanitarianism, not the Missio ad Gentes mandated by Ad Gentes (the true one, not the conciliar decree) and Quas Primas.

The Historical Irony: Invoking St. Pius X to Legitimize Modernism

The article’s mention of St. Pius X’s 1913 decree attaching Svalbard to the Norwegian ecclesiastical territory serves a single purpose: to drape the conciliar sect’s apostasy in the mantle of a Saint who would have excommunicated its architects. Pius X’s Lamentabili Sane Exitu (1907) condemned the very errors that define the post-conciliar church: the denial of the Magisterium’s authority over Scripture (Props. 1-8), the naturalistic explanation of Revelation (Props. 20-22), the evolution of dogma (Props. 53-54, 58-60), and the reduction of the Church to a purely human community (Props. 52-56).

The “Bishop” Varden, the “Apostolic Administrator,” the “Territorial Prelature of Tromsø” — these are structures of the Church of the New Advent, the paramasonic structure foretold by the prophets of Tradition. They occupy the geographical territories once assigned to the true Church, but they possess not the Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9). The “centenary” is not a celebration of the Faith planted in the Arctic; it is a celebration of the Faith uprooted and replaced by a counterfeit.

Symptomatic of the Conciliar Apostasy: The Abomination of Desolation in the Arctic

This event in Longyearbyen is a microcosm of the universal apostasy. A false hierarchy (Varden), a false liturgy (Novus Ordo), a false ecumenism (Lutheran participation), a false theology (therapeutic deism), and a false mission (humanitarian accompaniment) converge in the High Arctic. The “sound sense of reality” Varden preaches is the reality of the reign of Antichrist“the abomination of desolation… standing in the holy place” (Matthew 24:15).

The true Catholics of Svalbard — if any remain — are not those gathering in the Lutheran “Svalbard Church” for a simulated supper. They are those who, “in the desert… prepare the way of the Lord” (Isaiah 40:3), keeping the Tradition of the Fathers (2 Thessalonians 2:14), the True Mass, the true Faith, and the hope of the Social Kingship of Christ the King who alone can say: “All power is given to me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). The centenary of 1926 marks not a continuity of grace, but the measure of the loss. “The faithful city has become a harlot” (Isaiah 1:21). The “knocking on the door” Varden speaks of is the knocking of the Good Shepherd — but the voice the sheep hear in Svalbard is the voice of a hireling (John 10:12-13).
