The Conciliar Sect’s Threats Against the FSSPX Expose the Bankruptcy of Modernist Authority

Vatican News portal reports (May 13, 2026) that Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a statement warning the Society of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) against carrying out episcopal ordinations without a pontifical mandate, calling such an act “schismatic” and threatening excommunication. The statement claims Pope Leo XIV continues to pray that the FSSPX leadership “retrace their steps.” This ultimatum from the conciliar apparatus reveals not the FSSPX’s schism, but the utter theological and spiritual bankruptcy of the post-conciliar structure that has usurped authority over the Church of Christ.

The Conciliar Sect Presumes to Speak for the Church

The statement by Cardinal Fernández begins with a fundamental falsehood embedded in its very framing: it assumes that the structures occupying the Vatican — the “Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith,” the “Prefect,” the “Pope” — possess legitimate authority to define what constitutes schism within the Church of Jesus Christ. This assumption is the foundational error upon which the entire edifice of post-conciliarism rests.

The Cardinal states: “The episcopal ordinations announced by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X do not have the corresponding pontifical mandate.” The word “corresponding” is revealing — it implies that the FSSPX’s episcopal ordinations would be valid if only they received the imprimatur of Leo XIV. This presupposes that Leo XIV is the Roman Pontiff, that his mandate carries juridical and sacramental efficacy, and that the FSSPX exists in a state of subordination to his authority. None of these premises are true.

The true Church of Christ endures in the faithful who profess the integral Catholic faith, led by bishops with valid orders and validly ordained priests. The conciliar sect — the paramasonic structure that has occupied the Vatican since the death of Pope Pius XII — is not the Church of Christ. It is the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place (Matt. 24:15). Its “popes” are usurpers. Its “cardinals” are figureheads of apostasy. Its “dicasteries” are instruments of the destruction of the faith. When Cardinal Fernández warns of “schismatic acts,” he speaks as a functionary of a schismatic organization warning others against schism — a grotesque inversion that would be laughable if the spiritual stakes were not so catastrophic.

The Irony of “Schism” Accusations from Apostates

The statement cites Ecclesia Dei by “Pope St. John Paul II” — that is, the apostate Karol Wojtyła, a man who kissed the Koran, who prayed with animists at Assisi, who promoted the theology of religious liberty condemned by Pope Pius IX in the Syllabus of Errors (proposition 77: “In the present day it is no longer expedient that the Catholic religion should be held as the only religion of the State, to the exclusion of all other forms of worship”). Wojtyła’s entire pontificate was a systematic demolition of Catholic doctrine. His encyclical Ecclesia Dei is not a document of the Church’s Magisterium; it is a disciplinary measure issued by a manifest heretic who, according to the teaching of St. Robert Bellarmine, “by that very fact ceases to be Pope and head, just as he ceases to be a Christian and member of the body of the Church” (De Romano Pontifice, II, 30).

The Cardinal further quotes: “formal adherence to the schism constitutes a grave offense against God and entails the excommunication established by the law of the Church.” But which Church? The Church of the New Advent? The Church that worships at the altar of man? The Church that has replaced the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with a Protestant supper? The Church that teaches that non-Catholics can find salvation in their false religions? This is not the Church founded by Jesus Christ. This is the synagogue of Satan, and its excommunications are null, void, and of no effect — as Pope Paul IV declared in Cum ex Apostolatus Officio: “if at any time it shall appear that any Bishop… or even the Roman Pontiff, prior to his promotion or his assumption to the cardinalate or the papacy, has defected from the Catholic Faith or fallen into some heresy: his promotion or elevation… shall be null, void, and of no effect.”

Every “pope” from John XXIII onward has defected from the Catholic faith. John XXIII convened the robber council. Paul VI promulgated the heretical Declaration on Religious Freedom (Dignitatis Humanae), which Pope Gregory XVI condemned in Mirari Vos as “absurd and erroneous.” Wojtyła practiced pagan rites. Ratzinger denied the divinity of Christ in his theological writings. Bergoglio canonized heretics. Prevost — Leo XIV — continues the work of destruction. These men are not popes. They are antipopes, and their acts have no more authority than those of any other manifest heretic.

The FSSPX: Schism Within a Schism

While the conciliar sect’s threats are devoid of authority, it would be a grave error to conclude that the FSSPX represents the true Church. The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X is a schism within a schism — a group that, while preserving the externals of the Traditional Latin Mass, fundamentally acknowledges the legitimacy of the conciliar usurpers. Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre himself repeatedly recognized the authority of the antipopes in Rome. His infamous statement — “give us the old Mass, that is enough for us” — reveals the theological poverty of his position. The Mass is not merely a rite to be preserved in amber; it is the Unbloody Sacrifice of Calvary, inseparable from the fullness of Catholic doctrine, including the doctrine of the Church’s authority, the necessity of the true Pope, and the duty of all nations to submit to Christ the King.

Lefebvre was ordained a bishop by the known Freemason Liénart. The validity of his episcopal consecrations — and therefore of all ordinations flowing from him — is gravely suspect. Canon law and theological tradition teach that a bishop who consecrates another bishop without a pontifical mandate incurs excommunication, and the one consecrated shares in the canonical penalty. But here lies the paradox: if the “pope” issuing the mandate is himself a manifest heretic and therefore not the true Pope, then his mandate carries no weight, and the excommunication is null. The FSSPX exists in a canonical no-man’s-land — rejected by the conciliar sect for going too far, yet unwilling to break decisively with the structures of apostasy.

The FSSPX’s announced plan to ordain new bishops in July 2026 is not an act of Catholic restoration. It is an act of desperation by a group that has never fully embraced the sedevacantist position — the only position consistent with Catholic theology. As St. Robert Bellarmine teaches, a manifest heretic loses his office ipso facto, before any declaration by the Church. The FSSPX’s continued recognition of the antipopes, even while resisting some of their reforms, places them in a state of contradiction that no amount of liturgical traditionalism can resolve.

The Silence About the Real Schism

What is most striking about Cardinal Fernández’s statement is what it does not say. There is no mention of the real schism — the schism of the conciliar sect from the Catholic faith. There is no mention of the heretical doctrines promulgated at the Second Vatican Council: religious liberty, ecumenism, the collegiality of bishops as a limitation of papal authority, the notion that non-Christian religions are means of salvation. There is no mention of the destruction of the Mass through the Novus Ordo Missae, a rite conceived by the Freemason Annibale Bugnini that is at best of doubtful validity and at worst a Protestant assembly masquerading as the Holy Sacrifice.

Pope Pius XI, in his encyclical Quas Primas (1925), declared: “His reign, namely, extends not only to Catholic nations or to those who, by receiving baptism according to law, belong to the Church… but His reign encompasses also all non-Christians, so that most truly the entire human race is subject to the authority of Jesus Christ.” The conciliar sect has explicitly repudiated this teaching. Dignitatis Humanae asserts the right of every man to religious freedom — a right condemned by Pope Pius IX in the Syllabus of Errors (proposition 15: “Every man is free to embrace and profess that religion which, guided by the light of reason, he shall consider true”). The conciliar sect is in formal, material, and manifest schism from the Catholic faith. Its “cardinals” and “popes” are the schismatics, not the FSSPX.

St. Pius X, in Lamentabili Sane Exitu (1907), condemned the modernist proposition that “the Church is not a true and perfect society, entirely free — nor is she endowed with proper and perpetual rights of her own, conferred upon her by her Divine Founder” (condemned by Pius IX, Syllabus, proposition 19). The conciliar sect has reduced the Church to a human institution subject to the whims of its “leadership,” denying her divine constitution and her mission to teach, govern, and sanctify all nations.

The Primacy of God’s Laws Over the Conciliar Sect’s Decrees

Cardinal Fernández speaks of “excommunication established by the law of the Church.” But the law of the Church is not whatever the conciliar sect declares it to be. The law of the Church is the immutable law of God, codified in the canonical tradition of the true Church and interpreted by the authentic Magisterium. Pope Pius IX, in his letter to the bishops of Prussia, declared: “We vindicate for the Church the freedom which has been trodden underfoot with sacrilegious violence… these laws are null and void because they are absolutely contrary to the divine constitution of the Church.” The laws of the conciliar sect — including its threats of excommunication — are null and void for the same reason.

The duty of every Catholic is not to submit to the dictates of apostates, but to remain faithful to the unchanging deposit of faith. As Pope Leo XIII taught in Immortale Dei, the state — and by extension, all human societies — must recognize the kingship of Christ and submit to His law. The concilar sect has inverted this order, placing human authority above divine law, and then daring to call “schismatic” those who refuse to participate in their revolution.

The Only Path Forward

The FSSPX’s announced episcopal ordinations in July 2026 will not restore the Church. They will merely create another faction in the wilderness of post-conciliar Catholicism. The only path forward — the only path consistent with Catholic theology — is the full embrace of sedevacantism: the recognition that the See of Peter is vacant, that the conciliar usurpers are manifest heretics who have lost their authority ipso facto, and that the true Church endures in the faithful who profess the integral Catholic faith, celebrate the true Mass of Tradition, and await the restoration of the papacy by the merciful intervention of God.

The conciliar sect’s threats against the FSSPX are not a sign of strength but of desperation. They know that their authority is crumbling, that their “church” is emptying, that their doctrines are rejected by the faithful who still believe. They resort to the language of canonical penalties because they have no theological arguments left. They cannot defend Dignitatis Humanae against Mirari Vos. They cannot defend the Novus Ordo against the Council of Trent. They cannot defend Assisi against Quas Primas. All they can do is threaten — and threats are the last refuge of those who have lost the truth.

Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus — outside the Church, there is no salvation. The true Church is not the conciliar sect. The true Church is the society founded by Christ, governed by the true Pope (when God provides one), teaching the unchanging faith, and offering the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for the salvation of souls. Let every Catholic who reads this reject the lies of the conciliar sect, embrace the fullness of Catholic truth, and pray for the restoration of Holy Mother Church.
