Conciliar Bishops Condemn Lefebvrian Schism While Upholding Conciliar Apostasy
EWTN News portal (July 9, 2026) reports that the conciliar “bishops” Michael Burbidge of Arlington, John Iffert of Covington, and Manuel de Jesús Rodríguez of Palm Beach have issued decrees forbidding the faithful from attending the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) following the July 1, 2026 unauthorized episcopal consecrations at Ecône by the Lefebvrian faction. The article by Kate Quiñones details the “bishops'” declaration that SSPX confessions and marriages are invalid, their Masses an “abuse of the Eucharist,” and their schools schismatic, while inviting the faithful to the “diocesan” Traditional Latin Mass. This spectacle of the conciliar sect anathematizing its own controlled opposition exposes the total collapse of jurisdiction in the post-conciliar hierarchy, which has long since forfeited office by manifest heresy and apostasy, rendering its censures canonically null and theologically void.
The Juridical Nullity of the Conciliar Hierarchy’s Censures
The “bishops” Burbidge, Iffert, and Rodriguez invoke the authority of “antipope Leo XIV (Robert Prevost)” and the “Vatican” to declare the SSPX bishops excommunicated latae sententiae and their sacraments invalid or illicit. From the perspective of the integral Catholic faith, this exercise of jurisdiction is a brutum fulmen — a null thunderbolt. Pope Paul IV’s Bull Cum ex Apostolatus Officio declares infallibly that if any “Bishop, even if he be acting as an Archbishop, Patriarch or Primate; or any Cardinal… or even the Roman Pontiff, prior to his promotion… has defected from the Catholic Faith or fallen into some heresy: (i) his promotion or elevation… shall be null, void, and of no effect.” The 1917 Code of Canon Law, Canon 188.4, confirms that an office becomes vacant ipso facto “if the cleric… publicly defects from the Catholic faith.”
St. Robert Bellarmine, the Doctor of the Church on the Roman Pontiff, teaches definitively: “A manifest heretic… by that very fact ceases to be Pope and head, just as he ceases to be a Christian and member of the body of the Church… A non-Christian in no way can be Pope… for he cannot be the head of something of which he is not a member” (De Romano Pontifice II, 30). The line of claimants to the See of Peter since 1958 — John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, Francis, and now Leo XIV — have all publicly professed the heresies of Vatican II: religious liberty (Dignitatis Humanae, condemned by Pius IX in Quanta Cura and the Syllabus, Error 15, 77-79), ecumenism (condemned by Pius XI in Mortalium Animos), collegiality (destroying papal primacy), and the New Mass (a Protestantized rite invalid ex defectu formae et intentionis). By public defection from the Faith, they lost all jurisdiction ipso facto, without need of any declaratory sentence. As Bellarmine teaches, “heretics are already outside the Church before excommunication and deprived of all jurisdiction… condemned by their own judgment” (Titus 3:10-11). Therefore, the “excommunication” pronounced by an antipope against the Lefebvrians is a juridical nullity, an act of a private person devoid of canonical mission.
The Theatrical Anathema: Schism Within the Schism
The language of the conciliar “bishops” reveals the naturalistic and juridical mindset of the neo-church. Bishop Iffert declares the SSPX Masses “an abuse of the Eucharist, insofar as they make the sacrament of unity into an occasion of division within the Church.” This is the height of Pharisaical hypocrisy. The conciliar sect — the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place (Matt 24:15) — has made the “sacrament of unity” an occasion of division ab initio by fabricating a new rite of “assembly” (Novus Ordo Missae) that manifests the Protestant heresy of the “Lord’s Supper,” by imposing religious liberty which equates truth with error, and by canonizing the architects of the apostasy. As Pius XI teaches in Quas Primas: “When God and Jesus Christ… were removed from laws and states… the foundations of that authority were destroyed, because the main reason why some have the right to command and others have the duty to obey was removed.” The conciliar hierarchy derives its “authority” not from God but from the conciliar revolution; it is the very embodiment of the laicism and secularism condemned by Quas Primas as “the plague of our times.”
The SSPX, for its part, is the controlled opposition — the “schism within the schism.” By recognizing the antipopes as legitimate popes (una cum in the Canon of the Mass), they formally adhere to the neo-church and its heresies. Their 1988 and 2026 consecrations were acts of schism from the true Church (by recognizing the usurper) and disobedience to the antipope. The conciliar “bishops” condemn them not for heresy — for the SSPX largely accepts the conciliar magisterium in practice — but for disobedience to the antipope. This is a family quarrel within the Civitas Diaboli, not a defense of the Faith.
The Invalidity of the “Sacraments” on Both Sides
Burbidge declares SSPX Confession and Matrimony “invalid” and other sacraments “illicit.” Iffert clarifies: “This means that the celebrations are not permitted by the law of the Church and the cleric offering the sacrament commits the canonical and moral fault of disobedience in each instance.” This legalistic fixation on “permission” and “law” (Canon 188.4 notwithstanding) ignores the sine qua non of sacramental validity: a validly ordained priesthood acting with the intention of doing what the Church does.
The “priests” of the conciliar sect are ordained in the Pontificale Romanum of Paul VI (1968), a rite stripped of the essential form specifying the sacrificial priesthood and the power to offer the Unbloody Sacrifice of Calvary and forgive sins. No valid priesthood, no valid Mass, no valid absolution. The “Mass” celebrated in the diocesan parishes — whether the Novus Ordo “table of assembly” or the indult “TLM” (1962 Missal of the antipope John XXIII, said una cum antipapa) — is celebrated by men lacking valid orders, or by validly ordained priests (rare, pre-1968) who have defected from the Faith and intend to do what the conciliar church does, not what the Catholic Church does. Ex opere operato requires the intention of the Church; the intention of the neo-church is heretical.
Conversely, the SSPX priests, though mostly ordained in the traditional rite (often by the Freemason Cardinal Liénart or dubious bishops), celebrate the Most Holy Sacrifice una cum the antipope. This communicatio in sacris with a manifest heretic renders the sacrifice sacrilegium and the ministry schismatic. As St. Cyprian teaches: “He who has departed from the faith… cannot depose or remove anyone.” (Pope Celestine I on Nestorius, cited in Defense of Sedevacantism). The SSPX “Mass” is not the Unbloody Sacrifice of Calvary offered in union with the True Head, but a private action of a sect separated from the Vicar of Christ (the See being vacant) and united to the usurper.
The Farce of the “Diocesan TLM” as Pastoral Trap
Burbidge invites the faithful to “become active in any one of the eight locations in our diocese where this is currently possible” — referring to the indult/”Ecclesia Dei” Masses (FSSP, ICKSP, diocesan). Iffert echoes: “You will find the Catholic Mass and the sacramental life celebrated faithfully and respectfully throughout the Diocese of Covington.” This is the mousetrap. The indult communities are canonically erected by the conciliar hierarchy, accept Vatican II as “binding,” recognize the antipope, and use the 1962 Missal which inserts St. Joseph into the Canon (a grave liturgical abuse by an antipope) and is offered una cum the usurper. They are the indultists — the other wing of the pseudo-traditionalist bird. They legitimize the conciliar sect by providing a “traditional” facade for the abomination of desolation. Pius XI warns in Quas Primas: “The state must leave the same freedom to the members of Orders and Congregations… who are indeed the most valiant helpers of the Pastors of the Church.” But the “pastors” here are hirelings (John 10:12), and the “state” is the paramasonic structure occupying the Vatican.
The Silence on the Social Kingship of Christ: The Gravest Omission
Nowhere in the CNA article, nor in the “bishops'” letters, is there a whisper of the Social Kingship of Christ. Quas Primas instituted the Feast of Christ the King precisely to combat the “plague… so-called laicism, its errors and wicked endeavors” — the very errors the conciliar sect has enshrined as dogma: separation of Church and State (Syllabus, Error 55), religious liberty (Syllabus, Error 15), and the autonomy of temporal power from God (Syllabus, Error 39). Pius XI thundered: “The more the sweetest Name of our Redeemer is omitted with unworthy silence in international gatherings and parliaments, the more loudly it must be confessed and the more urgently the rights of Christ the Lord’s royal dignity and authority must be recognized.”
The conciliar “bishops” are the chief agents of this silence. They collaborate with the Masonic state, endorse “interreligious dialogue” (Assisi abominations), and bless the “rights of man” which are the rights of man in revolt against God. The SSPX pays lip service to the Kingship but recognizes the very power that dethroned Christ. Both sides serve the Revolution. The true Catholic response is not to choose between the Novus Ordo and the Missa una cum antipapa, but to adhere to the Sede Vacante reality, seeking out the true remnant clergy (validly ordained pre-1968 bishops/priests holding the integral Faith) who offer the Unbloody Sacrifice pro Papa nostro… sede vacante, or in their absence, making acts of perfect contrition and spiritual communion, awaiting the restoration of the Hierarchy by God’s Providence.
Canon 188.4 and the Vacant See: The Only Canonical Reality
The canonical reality is stark: The See of Peter is vacant. Canon 188.4 (1917 Code): “Every office becomes vacant by the mere fact and without any declaration by reason of tacit resignation recognized by the law itself, if the cleric… publicly defects from the Catholic faith.” Paul IV, Cum ex Apostolatus Officio: “…if at any time it shall appear that any… Roman Pontiff… has defected from the Catholic Faith or fallen into some heresy: (i) his promotion or elevation… shall be null, void, and of no effect.” Bellarmine: “A manifest heretic… ceases to be Pope… by his own judgment.”
The “bishops” Burbidge, Iffert, and Rodriguez are not successors of the Apostles. They are functionaries of a paramasonic structure, ordained in a rite that does not confer the episcopate, governing a sect that teaches heresy. Their “decrees,” “excommunications,” and “invitations” have the canonical weight of a private opinion. The faithful are not bound by them; indeed, they are forbidden by divine law (Canon 1325 §2, 1917 Code — “All apostates from the Christian faith… are suspected of heresy”) from communicating with them in sacris. The tragedy of the SSPX faithful is that they flee the Novus Ordo only to fall into the arms of the Lefebvrian compromise, remaining inside the conciliar church structure.
“Peace is only possible in the kingdom of Christ.” (Pius XI, Quas Primas). There is no peace in the conciliar sect, nor in its Lefebvrian satellite. The Unbloody Sacrifice of Calvary is found only where the true Faith, the true Priesthood, and the true Sacrifice remain — outside the structures of the abomination of desolation, in the catacombs of the Sede Vacante, waiting for the Restitutio.
